Richard Kelly was a visionary who transformed lighting design into an architectural art form. He redefined how we experience space by treating light as a fundamental element, blending technical precision with artistic sensitivity to shape the modern industry.
Submission Guidelines
Established in 1980 by the IES New York Section, the Richard Kelly Grant recognizes students and professionals who push the boundaries of illumination through innovative thought and artistic reverence.
To encourage creative activity and recognize those who preserve Richard Kelly’s ideals through the masterly use of light.
Open to anyone 35 years of age or younger, studying or working in the art and science of lighting in North America.
We accept proposed, ongoing, or completed works that demonstrate new ways to solve problems or understand light's behavior.
Submissions may span architecture, art, theater, health research, environmental design, and software or fixture design.
How to Apply
Submissions must clearly illustrate how your conceptual or applied use of light solves a problem. Ensure all digital materials are high-resolution and correlate directly with your project description.

Provide a one-page summary analyzing your thought process and the conceptual framework behind your presentation.
Describe how the grant will further your lighting research. Applicants must agree to use funds for the described purpose.
Submit a full CV including complete contact information and date of birth to verify eligibility and candidate history.
Two letters of reference must be sent directly by the authors in sealed envelopes, marked with the applicant’s name on the back.
